Collaboration with business, industry and the community helps us to increase and transfer our knowledge – and contribute towards economic growth, local and national regeneration and culture in the region.
The
Business and Industry Team,
Research and Commercial Services, and
Alta Innovations Ltd (the University's technology transfer company) promote and support these relationships, helping to shape research, enterprise and community strategies and forge links with external sponsors and partners.
Since 2001, £30.2 million worth of business has been brought to the University. Through consultancy, research and development, business support, licensing, Continuing Professional Development and advisory services, in the past twelve months:
- 17 patent applications have been filed
- 3 new patents have been granted
- 9 new licences negotiated
- £1.5 million has been earned from licensing
- 32 new start-up and spin out companies have been generated
- 68 Co-operative Awards in Science of the Environment (CASE) and 4 Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) programmes have been managed, transferring knowledge and expertise to businesses of all sizes
- 551 research projects have been managed, involving partnering and input from business to a value of £8.96 million.
- £17.3 million has been earned from a further 486 research projects involving non-commercial organisations.
- 358 consultancy contracts have been executed with a value of £5.5 million
- Over 30,000 days were delivered through Continuing Professional Development courses to the value of £5.4 million
- and 65 staff were specifically dedicated to provide these services to business
